Bookshop Hopping in Amsterdam

We know, we know. Who comes to Amsterdam to walk from one bookshop to another when you could be hopping from coffeeshop to coffeeshop? Please. Ridiculous.
But hey, stranger things have happened. Maybe the Red Light District is mysteriously closed, every coffeeshop has tragically run out of supplies, and suddenly you’re standing there… sober… wondering what to do with your life.
Relax. We’ve got you covered.
First things first: yes, there are big UK and US book chains in Amsterdam. Ignore them. They exist everywhere. Walk in only if you desperately need warmth or a bathroom break. Otherwise, this is where you actually want to go...
Scheltema
Start your walk from Central Station. Right across from Madame Tussauds, you’ll find Scheltema - a multi-floor bookshop that is basically the supermarket of books. Children’s literature? Check. Stationery? Check. Books you didn’t know you needed but will absolutely buy? Double check.
There’s even a tiny coffee spot inside (yes, actual coffee). One warning: you will lose track of time here. Remember, this is only stop number one. Pace yourself.
The Book Exchange
Now we’re getting serious. This place isn’t exactly hidden, but it is a gem smack in the middle of the city. Three floors and books are everywhere. The good kind of chaos. You’ll find everything from heavy philosophical reads to “I just want something fun for the train ride” books.
Bonus surprise: they have genuinely friendly staff. In Amsterdam. Helping you. We know - shocking.
Amsterdam Antiquarian Bookstore
Another canal-side treasure. Don’t let the word antiquarian scare you off - it’s not all dusty scrolls and forbidden spells. Yes, there are old books. Yes, some are rare. And yes, some are in English.
Prices range from “oh that’s cute” (€8) to “I need to emotionally prepare for this” (€1000).
Do. Not. Skip. It.
Island Bookstore
After all those antiques, you might crave something a little fresher. What about a tiny, cozy indie bookshop with a yellow door? Cross two canals, turn right, and boom - you’re in one of Amsterdam locals’ favorite weekend areas.
Small, charming, independent, and perfect for a slow browse. This one feels like a hug.
Bookstore Martyrium
Okay, personal favorite alert. It’s a bit out of the way in the Oud-Zuid neighborhood - but trust us, it’s worth every step. Not only do you get a glimpse of one of the prettiest local areas, but the bookshop itself is chef’s kiss.
Pro tip: head downstairs. That’s where the English books live, and they’re often seriously discounted. If you are on a budget looking for unique finds or TikTok-famous titles without paying full price then this is your spot.
It might surprise you, but this is still just a very short list of Amsterdam’s bookshops. Despite its party reputation, the city is a quiet paradise for bibliophiles.
So grab your umbrella, start walking, and let Amsterdam prove it has more stories than you expected.
